The Jane Watson Irwin Perennial Garden The New York Botanical Garden
The Perennial Garden & Ladies Border at 200th Street and Southern Boulevard Bronx, New York Size: ½ acre Open Tues-Sun; Mon – holidays only Website
Beginning in 1986 and continuing to the present, Lynden Miller has designed and overseen continuing improvements to the Perennial Garden and Ladies' Border. Because a garden with only perennials would be almost empty in the winter months, many shrubs are used to give structure and interest throughout the year.
Gardening with perennials has become increasingly popular, and the purpose of this garden is to show outstanding plants combined for their foliage and form as well as blooms. All the plants are labeled.
There are plantings in sun, shade, wet conditions as well as a section for the many plants which are at their best in the fall. One area is composed of plants with "cool" foliage and flowers (i.e. pastels) and another "hot" full of reds, oragnes and yellows.
