Why do cities need parks and gardens?
Because when they are well-planted and well-maintained, parks and gardens of all kinds are vital elements of city life.  Because people who live in cities need to feel a connection with nature, to see and enjoy the changing of the seasons.  Because when green spaces are in good condition, overflowing with lush plantings like Madison Square Park in the center of Manhattan’s noisy streets, not only do people enjoy them but real estate values go up and crime virtually disappears.

What are the benefits of public gardens?
Most importantly parks and gardens soften the harshness of city life because visitors feel complimented by a beautiful place made for them.  They respect the place and treat it and each other with courtesy.  Public parks and gardens must be designed for people.  If people are given public parks and gardens with plantings for year-round enjoyment, they feel better about themselves and their cities and everyone benefits.

How do we make these precious places last ?
We must allot public funds, and in some cases private funds, to be sure they are well-maintained.  This means hiring competent horticulturists and gardeners aided by volunteers.

All these issues are addressed in my book, Parks Plants and People.
